Andean highlands

This project investigates the intersections between labor, law, and freedom in the Central Andes, from the end of the Bourbon reforms to the independence movements (1760–1830). Drawing on extensive historical documentation, it analyzes the resistance practices and strategies of Indigenous and mestizo workers, highlighting legal negotiations and disputes over freedom amid processes of racialization and exploitation. Articulating microhistory, global history, and the social history of labor, the research connects local cases to transatlantic and transpacific dynamics, contributing to contemporary debates on colonial and postcolonial hierarchies.
